22nd VA Cavalry

The 22nd VA Cavalry was also known as Bowen's Regiment of Virginia Mounted Riflemen. Co. A was led by Capt. Abram Fuller. Co. B was led by Capt. Gordon Riffe; Co. C by Capt. John Stanfield; Co. D by Capt. Martin Ball; Co. E by Capt. Reese Baldwin; Co. F by Capt. William Brown; Co. G by Capt. William Moore; Co. H by Capt. Balaam Higginbotham; Co. I by Capt. William Samples; and Co. K by Capt. Miles Francis.

Henry Kane Nickels

Co. A, 22nd VA Cavalry

Henry Kane Nickels, son of Allen and Lucinda (Salyer) Nickels, was born February 17, 1839 in Scott Co., VA. He died October 11, 1911 at his home in Long Hollow near Nickelsville in Scott Co., VA. Kane made shoes for a living. He enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Co. A of the 22nd VA Cavalry on August 4, 1863 in Scott Co., VA. His post-war pension application indicates that he served until the end of the war.

From Scott Co., Minute Book 28, Page 400: "IN Vacation of the County Court of the County of Scott on the 23rd day of July 1900. The Application of H.R. Nickels for a Pension with the certificate of the chairman of the Confederate Pension Board of the County of Scott, that it has been approved by said Board thereon endorsed; was presented to the Judge of this Court in Vacation; and the Clerk of this Court is directed to certify a copy of this order to the Auditor of Public accounts."

It should be noted that Henry Kane Nickels was often erroneously listed as "H.R. Nickels" as the "K" was mistaken for an "R" due to the handwriting style.

Kane purchased 22 1/2 acres of land from his former commander, H.F. Kendrick, on November 15, 1888. This land was located in Long Hollow.

Kane married first Elizabeth A. "Betty" Marshall on November 21, 1861 in Scott Co., VA. He married second Sarah Ann Marshall on September 1, 1867 in Scott Co., VA. Sarah was the daughter of Elias and Elizabeth (Clark) Marshall. Kane and Sarah had seven children: William Henry "Billy" Nickels, Mary Ellen Nickels, Emily Frances Nickels Gibson, Alfred Martin Nickels, Newell Elias Nickels, Robert Allen Nickels, and Charles Franklin Nickels, my grandfather.

Peter Nickels

Co. A, 22nd VA Cavalry

Peter Nickels, son of Allen and Lucinda (Salyer) Nickels, was born March 17, 1832 in Scott Co., VA. He died July 3, 1929 near Snowflake in Scott Co., VA. Peter enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Co. A of the 22nd VA Cavalry on August 4, 1861 in Scott Co., VA. He was wounded while a courier in Monroe Co., WV. He was given a disability discharge at Saltville on May 18, 1863.

Peter married first Hannah Dean on December 17, 1857 in Scott Co., VA. He married second Maria Cosby (Addington) Quillen on April 18, 1888 in Scott Co., VA. Peter and Hannah had five children: John Henry Nickels, David Marion "T" Nickels, Charles Franklin Nickels, Mary Louise "Dovie" Nickels, and Walter Barlow "Dock" Nickels.

Spencer Gibson

Co. E, 22nd VA Cavalry

Spencer Gibson, son of Betsy McGee, was born about 1833 in Scott Co., VA. He died about 1880 in Alabama. Spencer enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Co. E of the 22nd VA Cavalry on August 4, 1862 in Russell Co., VA.

Spencer married Sarah J. Nickels on December 13, 1855 in Scott Co., VA. Sarah was the daughter of Allen and Lucinda (Salyer) Nickels. Spencer and Sarah had three children: William E. Gibson, George W. Gibson, and Eliza E. Gibson

Isaac Castle

Co. A, 22nd VA Cavalry

Isaac Castle, son of Zachariah and Catherine (Phenix) Castle, was born about 1834 in Scott Co., VA. He died before 1880. He was a shoemaker by trade. Isaac enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Co. A of the 22nd VA Cavalry on August 4, 1862 in Scott Co., VA. During his enlistment, Isaac became the company blacksmith.

Isaac married Martha J. "Patsy" Nickels on January 9, 1854 in Scott Co., VA. Patsy was the daughter of Allen and Lucinda (Salyer) Nickels. Isaac and Patsy had nine children: Elizabeth Castle Cox, Josephine Castle Salyer, Ritta Caroline Castle Salyer, Canara Castle, Thomas Melvin Castle, Catherine Castle, Mollie Castle, Sarah Ellen Castle Sayler, and Melvina Castle Tripplett.

Granville C. Renfro

Co. A, 22nd VA Cavalry

Granville C. Renfro, son of John and Lurana (Crisson) Renfro, was born about 1847 in Scott Co., VA. He enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Co. A of the 22nd VA Cavalry on December 20, 1863 in Scott Co., VA.

Granville married Juliet V. Nickels on January 9, 1874 in Scott Co., VA. Juliet was the daughter of James, Jr. and Fannie (Godsey) Nickels. Granville and Juliet had three children: Fannie N. Renfro Pierson, Ella Renfro Steffey, and Julie Renfro.

Pleasant J. Steffey

Co. A, 22nd VA Cavalry

Pleasant J. Steffey, son of John and Mary Steffey, was born about 1834 in Smyth Co., VA. He died September 13, 1864 in Point Lookout, MD. Pleasant enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Co. E on July 2, 1861 and transferred to Co. A of the 22nd VA Cavalry on October 15, 1863. He was taken prisoner of war at Point Lookout where he died of dysentery.

Pleasant married Mary Ann Nickels on June 2, 1858 in Scott Co., VA. Mary Ann was the daughter of James, Sr. and Serena (Jaynes) Nickels. Pleasant and Mary Ann had three children: James Jefferson Steffey, Anna Steffey, and Melvina Steffey.

Samuel Letcher Burke, Sr.

Co. A, 22nd VA Cavalry

Samuel Letcher Burke, Sr., son of Flemming, Jr. and Nancy (Jessee) Burke, was born about 1830 in Russell Co., VA. He died in 1889 in Russell Co., VA. Samuel enlisted as a Confederate soldier in Co. E of the 22nd VA Cavalry on August 4, 1862 in Russell Co., VA.

Samuel married Nancy Ann Johnson. Samuel and Nancy had six children: Mary Catherine Burke Porter, Stephen Burke, James Lemuell Burke, Samuel Letcher Burke, Jr., Isaiah Nathaniel Burke, and Nancy Jane Burke Salyer. Isaiah Nathaniel Burke was the father of Mary Louvinia "Lula" Burke who married Charles Franklin Nickels, my grandfather.
