Here is the information I have on my Matney family. Most of it is documented with tax lists, land records, and deeds while some of it comes from traditional material.

Walter Matney, Sr. was born about 1747 and died after 1803. His wife's name was Mary "Polly" - maiden name unknown. Walter "Mattingly" appears on the personal property tax list in Montgomery Co., VA in 1782. He was also listed as a member of the Montgomery County militia that year. By 1785, Walter was living in Washington Co., VA. The only extant records I have found for him in Washington County are tax lists, land surveys, and deeds. He last appears on the Washington County tax list in 1803. He may have moved to Tazewell Co., VA as there is a Walter Matney on the tax lists there, but it is unclear whether this is Walter, Sr. or Walter, Jr.

According to traditional material, Brooks Matney was Walter and Polly's oldest child. His parentage has been proven through tax lists. He was born about 1768 and his estate was appraised in Tazewell Co., VA in April 1828, indicating he died sometime prior to that. Brooks Matney first appears on the tax list for Washington Co., VA in 1789. He married "Jennit" Young on December 23, 1794 in Washington Co., VA. The minister who performed the ceremony was Nicholas Reagan.

The children of Brooks and Janett (Young) Matney are: Walter Matney, Mary Matney Clark, David Matney, Charles Matney, Jinny Matney Jackson, William Matney, Margaret Matney Jackson, Elizabeth Matney Ratliff, Jefferson Matney, and Nancy Matney Curlee.

The second child of Walter, Sr. and Polly Matney was Walter Matney, Jr. He was born about 1772 and died in Buchanan Co., VA on December 23, 1862. His parentage is proven through tax lists. Walter had possession of his father's land in Washington Co., VA for a time, then he sold his part of the land in 1803. He was married to Charity Young on September 11, 1800 in Washington Co., VA by William Wilson. In the 1850 census of Tazewell Co., VA, Walter, Jr. stated he was born in Maryland.

The children of Walter, Jr. and Charity (Young) Matney are: Charity Matney Childers, David Matney, Daniel Matney, Jefferson Matney, Walter Matney, and Alexander Matney.

Charles Matney, child of Walter, Sr. and Polly Matney was born about 1775. His parentage has been proven through tax lists.

Traditional information indicates that another child of Walter, Sr. and Polly Matney was Polly Matney. She was born about 1779. She was married to Archibald Buchanan on January 23, 1801 in Washington Co., VA by William Wilson.

Another child of Walter, Sr. and Polly Matney may have been Temperance Matney. She was born about 1781. Temperance married Samuel Bloomer on March 21, 1803 in Washington Co., VA. The ceremony was performed by William Wilson.

Lydia Matney, child of Walter, Sr. and Polly Matney, was born about 1783 and died July 3, 1859 in Tazewell Co., VA. Her death record lists her parents as Walter and Polly Matney. Lydia married first ____ Owens, second James F. Crabtree on December 23, 1858 in Smyth Co., VA.

Traditional information indicates that Jane Matney was the child of Walter, Sr. and Polly Matney. Jane was born about 1785 and died about 1855 in Scott Co., VA. She was married to James Nickels, Sr. on January 13, 1803 in Washington Co., VA by Nicholas Reagan. Jane and James divorced in 1839 in Scott County.

The children of Jane Matney and James Nickels, Sr. are: William Henderson Nickels, James Nickels, Jr., Cinderella Nickels Kilgore, Walter H. Nickels, Allen Nickels, Elizabeth Nickels Courtney, Brooks Nickels, Mary "Polly" Nickels Kilgore, and Mathias Nickels.
